Sonic Waking With Ken Gregory and Steve Heimbecker Released: 2006 (Canada) Independent release Format: CD Tracklist + listen
Listen to Dream Time Trance >>
1. compression capsule 15:52 In 1993 and 1994, Ken Gregory, Steve Heimbecker and Shawn Pinchbeck met at various sound art happenings in western Canada. Previously not knowing that each other were active in the prairies, they quickly realized that they had many things in common with their artistic practices and their origins in the mid eighties in isolation in their respective prairie cities; Ken from Winnipeg Manitoba, Steve from Calgary Alberta, and Shawn from Edmonton Alberta. In 1995, Steve and Shawn, because of their close proximity, started collaborating together regularly. Ken and Steve both went to Edmonton several times in the mid to late nineties to perform and conduct workshops for the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society(BEAMS) of which Shawn was the president of at the time. This particular project started out in February 1998 with an invitation to Ken, Steve and Shawn to go to emmedia in Calgary to do a week long collaborative residency ending with a concert at the Alberta College of Art and Design. The results were inspiring for all of them. Ken arranged a concert in November 1998 at the Send and Receive [001] a festival of sound in Winnipeg. This recording is the result of that concert and indeed a snapshot of the electroacoustic activities going on in the prairies at that time. |

Resonance With Marion Garver Released: 1995 (Canada) Independent release Tracklist + listen
Resonance is the new release by Canadian born performer/ composer Shawn Pinchbeck and American born flute player/ composer Marion Garver. Together they create a powerfully crafted mixture of ambient electronic sounds and flute accompanied melodies and textures.
Pinchbeck and Garver share the song credits through the ten tracks and 65 minutes of music. The resulting hybrid of sounds ranges from Pinchbeck’s multi-layered synthesizers, samples and tapes spinning sometimes peaceful ambient melodies, sometimes brooding abstract soundscapes; to Garver’s three acoustic instrumental pieces exploring differing musical directions rooted in 20th Century classical and jazz styles. The effect it has is to take the listener on an expansive journey with many destinations, some familiar others more exotic. Listen to the audio samples 2. Temporal Reality >> 3. For SWRM >> 4. Active Crossover Released: 2010 (UK) Format: Internet release Label: Impulsive Habitat Tracklist
Simon Whetham
Throughout May 2009 I participated in a residency at the Polymer Factory Culturehouse in Tallinn, Estonia, to compose new work, collaborate with other artists using sound and run deep listening, field recording and composition workshops. This residency has resulted in ‘Active Crossover’, a touring exhibition and exchange project which has been hosted by the Arnolfini in Bristol and The Grey Area in Brighton, incorporating a large scale sound installation in two sonically treated chambers, creating three separate listening experiences. In one you hear my composition created during and following the residency, in the other work by all the artists i worked and performed with. When outside the enclosed spaces, the listener will hear both, combining my work with that of the guest artists. The track released by Impulsive Habitat is a composed approximation of being in the exhibition space and moving around the three chambers. You will hear my work in isolation, and that of the guest artists, but also a combination of the two.

Driven Element Compilation Released: 1988 (Canada) Format: CASS Label: Driven Element Productions Tracklist
From around 1982 until about 1991 (dates are unclear) Marcel Dion ran a weekly Electronic/Experimental/Avant-Garde radio show on CJSR (campus/community radio station in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) called Departures. It’s always unclear with campus/community radio how large your audience is and so it’s unknown how popular the show was. However, what is clear is that it became a beacon for the local electronic/experimental music community in Edmonton at that time. As such, in 1988 Marcel decided to produce a compilation of local talent fitting the vision of his show and created the tiny private press cassette Driven Element.Waxidermy, June 17, 2007
